Milton Keynes: £650, over 100 bras and the 'fun and fair play' message from women's grassroots table tennis

An empty medical room and a shifting equipment store — a team is about to make news. But on the morning of 6 September, Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre carried none of the tension I associate with line-up drama. Instead, there were 14 women, four bins of bras and a board that read “fun and fair play”. The centre’s second annual ladies charity tournament is not part of the ITTF system and carries no ranking points, yet it may be the most important piece in the grassroots picture. Julie Snowdon, a Table Tennis England staff member and secretary of the centre, was by the tables from early morning. She has been the driving force behind the monthly ladies-only sessions, and this time those regulars became the tournament’s core. The money raised — £650 — went directly to Breast Cancer Now. More than 100 old bras were collected and given to Against Breast Cancer for recycling, turning a plain sporting event into a meaningful community loop. Since 2026 I have forced my emotions to sit at the same table as data, but here emotion and statistics are not opposed. Fourteen competitors, £650, more than 100 bras. These three small numbers form a simple equation: the centre used the right participants, the right resources and the right message. Most of the women had attended the previous monthly session, so this was no desperate attempt to attract strangers. It was the next step for a group that already shared a rhythm. They were not chasing points or facing strange defensive styles; they wore familiar trainers and played a format with two group rounds, meaning everyone reached a final — the main final or the consolation final. If you isolate every technical element, the story seems empty: no player is named, no specific score is recorded, no statistics are offered, and no tactical pattern is discussed. Specialists may view this as a social gathering with a few rallies. I think that view is too narrow. Outsiders see the present moment, while people who spend time at training sessions see the system. A 14-player charity event is actually a doorway for women who want to step into a centre with an existing weekly rhythm. It keeps veterans close, then draws their friends, their schedules and their small promises such as “see you next month”. The training hall does not lie; only a few people are patient enough to sit and listen. Sitting for a long time at Milton Keynes, I heard the familiar bounce of the ball, the laughter in the room, and — more importantly — I observed the behaviour of local organisers. They are not imitating elite sport. They choose a light-hearted tournament to solve the problem of female participation. Some will call it non-professional; I call it the real professionalism of a table tennis community that understands how to widen its base. If federations only chase elite results and ignore centres like this, the next generation of players will have no starting point. I do not know whether Julie Snowdon deliberately wants to build a talent pipeline. The fact that she has kept this event alive for two consecutive years is already a signal. Women’s table tennis in England does not lack people who can play; it lacks welcoming meeting points where they dare to play in front of others. This second edition raised funds, collected old bras, and created a date on the calendar. It tells women that, on the first Saturday of September, there will always be a table, a ball and people ready to play. That is the foundation. A healthy table tennis community must care about frequency and the feeling of belonging before it can worry about technical quality. The Milton Keynes story does not end on 6 September.
