India beat New Zealand but their quarterfinal ticket depends on Oman – Bahrain clash

Fukuoka witnessed a strange evening. India won their first match of the 2026 AVC Men's Volleyball Asian Championship, yet they still do not control their own quarterfinal fate. The Indian men's volleyball team swept New Zealand 25-22, 25-18, 25-21, but their hopes now depend on Wednesday's Pool A match between Oman and Bahrain. India finished third in Pool B with a 1-2 record. If Oman earn a three-point victory, Oman will surpass India. If Bahrain win 3-0, the sides involved will be separated by point ratio. In every other scenario, India advance to the last eight. Opposite and captain Jerome Vinith Charles led India with 19 points, including two kill blocks. Outside hitter Chirag Yadav added 14 points with three aces and one block, while outside hitter Amit Balwan Singh contributed 13 points and two blocks. New Zealand's Seth Dylan Grant scored 15 points, John McManaway added 13, and Mana Placid finished with 12. New Zealand were eliminated after the loss. Japan defeated Australia 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 in front of about 6,500 home fans at Kitakyushu City Gymnasium. Japan finished Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record. Yuji Nishida led all scorers with 16 points at an 82 percent attack success rate, while Ran Takahashi delivered 13 points with five aces and a 70 percent kill rate. Australia ended second in the pool at 2-1. William D'Arcy-Miles led Australia with 13 points, and Lorenzo Pope added 11. Korea wrapped up Pool C by sweeping Qatar 25-20, 25-19, 25-15. Korea finished 2-1 with seven points. Mubarak Musa Thiik Madut of Qatar led all players in that match with 17 points, while Korea's Jaeyoung Lim scored 15. The 2026 AVC Men's Volleyball Asian Championship serves as an Olympic qualifier for Los Angeles 2028 and a pathway to the 2027 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Cup. That is why every pool result carries such weight. India did what they needed to do against New Zealand, but their tournament future will now be decided by Oman and Bahrain.
